A new (February, 2024), revised and updated edition of the sports climbing guidebook to the Slovenian climbing areas includes over 5700 routes in 107 climbing areas. It rounds up all the sports climbing possibilities from the Mediterranean area, including Osp and Mišja peč, to the alpine regions of the Julian Alps and the hills of the Slovenian north-east.

Many hand-drawn crag topos have been replaced with photos, which often make finding the desired route much easier. But state-of-the-art paintings by Danilo Cedilnik – Den, an experienced Himalayan climber, alpinist, and painter, remain our trademark.

One of the great attractions of Slovenia is how small and compact it is. The sea and the Karst, the Alps and the Pannonian plains all of them are just a couple hours’ drive away, even if it means driving across the whole country. This makes Slovenia a climbing destination par excellence and a place where you can climb throughout the year. From the crags in the high Alpine areas and the walls tucked away in cold forests where you can climb during the heat of the summer, to the yellow tufas near the sea where you’ll be wearing short sleeves in the depth of winter, while other people are skiing and climbing frozen waterfalls less than two hundred kilometres away… All of this and more will be right at your fingertips.

The peaks of the Chaltén Massif are some of the most iconic in the world, jagged spires that shoot toward the sky. They offer a wide variety of objectives, from enjoyable mountaineering outings, to unrepeated multi-day bigwall climbs. With its excellent quality granite and uniquely wild rime formations, it is one of the world’s ultimate alpine playgrounds, seducing climbers from every corner. Although this is not the faraway land it once was, the beauty of the peaks, the quality of the rock, unusual ice formations, and the moody nature of the weather, remain unchanged, providing fertile ground for enriching experiences and lasting memories.

This book describes every peak and climb in the area — 485 routes in 75 peaks. It includes 120 topos, 145 photo-topos, as well as 120 action or scenic photos. The first edition won the Best Guidebook award at the Banff Film and Book Festival in Canada. This is the third edition, and it has been updated and expanded.

    About the author

Rolando Garibotti grew up in Bariloche, and first visited the massif to climb in 1986, age 15, when with a childhood friend they ascended Aguja Guillaumet. At the time El Chaltén had a single, empty house. For the following thirty years he climbed extensively in the area. In 2008, with Colin Haley, they rode across the four fairy tale summits of the Cerro Torre group, completing the Torre Traverse.

Tine Mihelič is one of the best connoisseurs of the Slovene mountains. The volume introduces over 80 tours, from relatively easy medium-altitude trips and walks to serious high-mountain tours and traverses. The Julian Alps hold a central position in this guide, being the mightiest mountain range in Slovenia. Nevertheless the author has added ascents to the most important summits of the Karavanke and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, which though smaller in extent, are no les interesting for the attractiveness of their destinations.
This selection of tours represents the most beautiful that the mountains of Slovenia can offer and at the same time invites you to discover this easternmost part of the Alpine chain.

“During numerous trips to well-known mountain-biking centres in Europe I became convinced that the Soča Valley provides in one relatively small area everything that many other mountain-biking destinations offer if taken all together: a plentiful selection of varied tours, diverse terrain with favourable weather conditions, a unique position between the Alps and the sea, panoramic mountains, unspoilt nature and a rich cultural and natural heritage. This guide embraces the entire region of this exceptionally rich, picturesque and fascinating valley and rounds up most of the mountain-biking possibilities in the area extending from the Julian Alps to the end of the valley in the lower reaches of the River Soča.” Leon Leban
